SUpporting Elliott's mission
We are always looking for new volunteers, whether you can volunteer once a semester or once a week!
One of the most special aspects of Elliott is the vibrant volunteer base that keeps us running. With around 100 active volunteers, Elliott would not exist without the love and passion of its community.
It was the vision of Elliott's founders to be entirely self-sufficient due to contributions of the student body. The more hands, the lighter the load, and it often happens that we run just short of a full schedule of helpers for the week.
Are you able to volunteer in one of the various positions we need to fill? Take a look at the descriptions below, and if you're interested, do not hesitate to contact any member of the Elliott Board, email us at [email protected], or fill out the form below. We cannot stress enough how important our volunteers are, and we are so grateful for the support of our community for keeping Elliott alive!

Bartending & Surveillance
For the parties downstairs, Bar Team needs both bartenders and surveillance members.
Bartenders serve drinks all night long alongside a team of at least one other bartender and an Elliott Board member who serves as a "runner." In exchange for your shift, you receive coins that you can redeem for free drinks at future parties!
Surveillance is a relatively lucrative volunteer position. In exchange for a shift of around 2 hours, you receive a handful of coins that can be exchanged for any food or drink in Elliott (more details on this system will be given during training). A surveillance shift mainly entails monitoring the people coming to and going from Elliott, ensuring they stay quiet and adhere to our rules. It can be rather quiet at times, so many surveillance volunteers bring study materials with them.
Bar Team Positions
Bar Team is (usually) made up of the Bar Manager, HR, S&P, and the Operations Manager.
Bar Team Manager: The bar manager's job is to chair meetings, have a clear overview of the happenings of the bar, and keep track of stock. This is not too difficult, if you have some leadership skills to keep meetings efficient yet enjoyable and are able to count to maybe 20 then you will make a great bar manager!
Human Resources (HR) Manager: Your main responsibility is the bartenders. You will train the new volunteers, make the bartending schedule, and remind the bartenders of their shifts. This also includes surveillance training and shifts. As HR, you are (almost) always guaranteed to bartend when you want to bartend. 😉
Sales & Products (S&P) Manager: Your main responsibility is the drinks. You will get to come up with new drinks offers (think rainbow shots, or potentially fire-hazardous shots that we will probably have to reject) and analyze their profitability. As S&P, you get to call the shots (haha) and possibly test out the new offers.
Party Team: RASA puts out a call each semester with the available positions, so check out their emails for more details!

Food Team Volunteer
Food Team volunteers mainly help with the preparation of sandwiches for lunch. There are two shifts per day (opening and closing) where you prepare the food, make the pre-ordered sandwiches and serve people who order at the counter, and clean up after the lunch rush. There are usually two people per shift, so it is a good opportunity to volunteer with a friend or meet someone new. In exchange, you get a free sandwich for lunch!
Additionally, Food Team may ask for help with the dinners. This would mainly be in preparing, serving, and/or cleaning up after the meal, and in exchange, you can help yourself to a serving or two of the delicious dinner.
Food Team Positions
Food Team consists of Food Team Manager, HR Manager, S&P Manager and Operations Manager. Elections occur at the end of each Spring semester (usually) for a year-long term.
Food Team Manager: On top of representing the interests of the Food Team in the Elliott Board, the Food Team Manager oversees the Food Team on a whole, chairing weekly meetings and following up with members.
Food Team Human Resources (HR) Manager: The HR Manager is mainly tasked with filling the weekly volunteer schedule, recruiting and training new volunteers for shifts, and communicating with volunteers.
Food Team Sales & Products (S&P) Manager: S&P is in charge of pricing the new offers and looks at how sales are going in order to improve.
Food Team Quality Assurance (QA) Manager: The QA Manager has an eye for consistency and ensures the products are well kept and prepared. They also communicate with the volunteers and make the pre-order posts.
Food Team Public Relations (PR) Manager: The PR Manager crafts eye-catching posters and lets the UCR community know about various offers and events from the Food Team.
Food Team Dinner Coordinator: A relatively new position, the Dinner Coordinator is focused on the (bi)weekly dinners in Elliot (in charge of pricing and making of the dinners) and collaborating with the other members of Food Team to ensure successful meals.
Operations Manager: As a representative of the Elliott Daily Board, the Operations Manager is mainly there for additional support and to ensure hygiene standards and the appropriate logistics are in order.

Interior Design Team Helper
Interior Design Team is always looking for excited crafters, handypeople and DIYers to join their ranks. The Facilities Manager posts in the Facebook group with any opportunities to help out on projects, and if you're interested, you can simply respond to the post. There may also be brainstorming sessions or a few regular meetings for different projects. This is a flexible position, and you are more than welcome to propose your ideas at any time! Some projects from 2020 included renovating the middle meeting room (now the Blue Room), repainting the bathrooms, and decorating for the various holidays.
Mensa Bartending
Mensa Team relies on a steady flow of volunteers to keep the Mensa open, both through daily operations and some special events! A normal shift as a bartender means serving drinks and snacks throughout the day, either on your own or with a friend. These shifts are excellent chances to blast your favorite music and chat with Elliott-goers. As a reward, you get a free drink of your choice, from the fanciest hot chocolate deluxe you can imagine to a simple beer.
Occasionally, there are events like VrijMiBo's, game nights, and FryDays where Mensa Team needs additional help. These events are a lot of fun to help with, and you usually get a free drink or snack in return, along with a night of great company.
Mensa Team Positions
Mensa Team consists of Mensa Manager, HR Manager, S&P Manager and Operations Manager (as an aid). Elections occur at the end of each Spring semester (usually) for a year-long term.
Mensa Manager: The Mensa Manager oversees the Mensa Team. They are responsible for the well-being of the Mensa as a whole. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling and training volunteers, ensuring that there are snack and drink options, and that the Mensa and Study Lounge are fit for use to study or just to hang out. The Mensa Manager chairs Mensa Team meetings and represents the interest of the Mensa in the general Elliott Board meetings.
Mensa Human Resource (HR) Manager: The HR-manager takes care of scheduling and training volunteers. This person is the go-to individual for whoever wants to take a shift or wish to be trained. As the primary caretaker of scheduling, the HR-manager posts a Facebook message in the private Mensa Bartenders Facebook group each or multiple times a week if shifts need to be filled. The HR-manager works closely with the S&P-Manager and sits in the Mensa team.
Mensa Sales & Products (S&P) Manager: The S&P is responsible for (bi)weekly offers of drinks and snacks in the Mensa. Moreover, they ensure that the product is promoted. Together with the Mensa Manager, the S&P-manager helps out with the organisation of events. The S&P cooperates with the Operations Manager and Mensa Manager to make sure that the offer is viable financially and also will sell well.
Operations Manager: The Romeo to our (Mensa Manager, HR-manager, S&P-manager) Juliet, the Operations Manager slams the brakes wherever necessary to prevent otherworldy things from happening. As a representative from the Elliott Daily Board in the Mensa Team, the Operations Manager aids in helping the Mensa Team function well by helping with events and providing information with regards to products and logistics where needed.
